How the Powder Coating Process Works
Powder coating is a precise, multi-stage process that transforms raw metal into a smooth, durable and attractive finish. While it might look simple from the outside, each stage of the process plays a vital role in ensuring the coating adheres properly and performs over the long term.

Surface Preparation

Powder Application
Once the surface is prepared, the metal part moves to the application booth. Here, the coating powder — made up of finely ground pigment and resin particles — is sprayed onto the metal using an electrostatic spray gun.
This gun gives the powder a positive electric charge, while the metal part is grounded. The charge causes the particles to attract to the metal’s surface like a magnet, forming an even layer without runs or drips.
One of the major advantages of this electrostatic process is efficiency: any overspray can be collected and reused, reducing waste and cost.
Curing the Powder
After application, the coated part is placed in a curing oven set to around 180°C–200°C. During this stage, the powder melts, flows and chemically reacts to form a hard, uniform coating.
Curing times vary depending on the metal type, coating thickness and powder formulation, but most finishes are fully cured within 10–30 minutes. When cooled, the result is a durable, chip-resistant and corrosion-proof surface that’s ready for use.
Cooling and Inspection
Once the curing process is complete, the part is carefully cooled to room temperature. Skilled technicians then inspect the finish for consistency, ensuring the coating is even, smooth and free from imperfections such as orange peel or thin spots.
